Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Cadence, the free medication reminder app for iPhone and Apple Watch.

Getting Started

Is Cadence free?

Yes. The free tier includes unlimited medications, smart reminders with dose windows, lock screen actions, follow-up alerts, prescription label scanning, medication interaction warnings, daily reflections and supply tracking. No ads, no account required. Cadence Pro unlocks the Insights dashboard, reflection trends, Apple Health integration, adherence reports and the Journey companion, for a one-time $9.99.

What medications does Cadence support?

Any medication, supplement or vitamin you take on a schedule. You can set daily, weekly, interval-based or cyclical (on/off) schedules with flexible dosage options.

How do I add my medications?

You can scan your prescription label with your camera, search our database of 2,300+ medications, or type the name manually. Cadence suggests common dosages for popular medications and lets you set frequency presets (once, twice or three times daily) with one tap. Always double-check that scanned information is correct before saving.

What does Cadence Pro include?

Pro adds the Insights dashboard, health correlations (connecting Apple Health data to your adherence patterns), adherence reports you can share with your healthcare provider, reflection mood and symptom trend analysis, behaviour impact cards, the Journey companion landscape and milestone sharing. It is a one-time purchase of $9.99.

What happens after the 7-day trial?

After your trial ends, Pro features lock but all your data remains. You keep full access to reminders, scheduling, interaction warnings and everything in the free tier. If you choose to upgrade, it is $9.99 once and yours forever.

Can I switch from another medication app?

Yes. Add your medications in Cadence and start tracking. There is no import feature from other apps, but setup takes about 2 minutes per medication with the label scanner or drug database search.

Privacy and Data

Where is my data stored?

On your device and in your personal iCloud account. Cadence does not operate servers that store your health data. Your medication list, dose history, reflections and health metrics never leave Apple's ecosystem.

Do you sell my health data?

No. We do not sell, share or monetise your health data in any way. We collect only anonymous usage analytics (which features are used most) and crash reports. This data cannot be linked to you or your medications.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Cadence works without any account or sign-up. Your data syncs between your devices via iCloud, which is controlled by your Apple ID.

Can I export my data?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Data, then Export My Data. Cadence generates a JSON file containing all your medications, dose logs and reflections that you can save or share via the system share sheet.

Can I delete all my data?

Yes. Settings, then Data, then Clear All Data. This permanently removes all medications, dose history, reflections and preferences from your device and iCloud.

Features

How do lock screen notifications work?

When a dose is due, Cadence sends a time-sensitive notification with Take, Skip and Snooze actions. Press and hold to log your dose right from the lock screen, with no need to unlock or open the app.

What can I see in Insights?

Insights is a 3-layer view available with Cadence Pro. A Daily Briefing opens with your rhythm and a short narrative built from your data. Factor cards underneath show what is working and what needs attention. Below that, a tabbed deep dive lets you explore adherence, health, reflections and medications in detail, including a Dose Share chart and a browsable month history. It is designed to help you spot patterns, not to tell you what to do.

Does Cadence work with Apple Health?

With Cadence Pro, you can pull in 10 metrics from Apple Health: heart rate, resting heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, SpO2, steps, weight, blood glucose, sleep and HRV. Cadence shows how each metric correlates with your medication adherence.

What are dose windows?

A dose window is the time after your scheduled hour during which a dose is still considered "on time." The default is 60 minutes. A dose scheduled at 8am with a 60-minute window is not marked overdue until 9am. You can adjust the window per medication from 5 to 180 minutes.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Cadence sends a follow-up reminder 30 minutes after a missed dose so nothing slips through. You can also mark a dose as skipped with an optional note.

How do medication interaction warnings work?

Cadence checks your medications against a local database of clinically significant interaction pairs, covering both brand and generic names across the US, UK and Australia. Warnings appear when you add a new medication and on the medication detail view. All checking happens on your device with no internet required.

How does smart timing work?

Cadence learns when you actually take each medication based on your confirmation history. If you consistently take your 8am dose at 8:15, Cadence adjusts the reminder to match your pattern. You can see your timing profiles in the medication detail view.

What is your Rhythm?

A daily reading from 0 to 100 reflecting how well you are maintaining your medication routine. It factors in recent adherence, consistency, timing and reflection engagement. Your rhythm appears in the morning briefing after about a week of using the app.

Can I share my data with my doctor?

Yes. Cadence Pro generates detailed PDF adherence reports that include per-medication breakdowns, health pattern findings, skip reason summaries and timing consistency data. You can share the PDF directly from the app.

Can I send updates to a caregiver?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Health Tools, then Send Caregiver Update. Cadence generates a privacy-safe daily summary (dose count and adherence, no medication names) that you can share via iMessage, email or any messaging app.

Does Cadence work on Apple Watch?

Cadence syncs your schedule to Apple Watch. Lock screen widgets show your next dose countdown and days-walked counter. Full Watch app functionality is available for quick dose confirmation.

Can I track as-needed (PRN) medications?

Yes. Mark a medication as "as needed" during setup. PRN medications appear in a separate section on the Today tab with usage tracking: how many times today, when you last took it, and weekly usage trends. You can set an optional minimum gap between doses and a rolling 24-hour cap.

Can I set up a tapering schedule?

Yes. In the medication form, expand the Tapering section to add dosage steps with start dates. The app shows your current taper step and progress on dose cards.

What is the Journey feature?

The Journey is a visual companion that turns your medication routine into a mountain trail. As your days walked grow, you climb higher through changing seasons and reach named milestones. It is available with Cadence Pro.

Troubleshooting

My notifications are not appearing

Check that notifications are enabled for Cadence in your iPhone Settings (Settings, then Notifications, then Cadence). Make sure Time Sensitive notifications are allowed. If you use Focus modes, ensure Cadence is permitted. You can also check the per-medication notification toggle in the medication detail view.

How do I change my medication schedule?

Go to Settings, then Manage Medications, then tap the medication. Tap Edit Medication to change times, dosage, schedule or any other setting. You can also long-press a dose card on the Today tab and select Edit Medication.

I travelled and my times are wrong

Cadence detects timezone changes and automatically reschedules all notifications for your new timezone. A banner appears on the Today tab confirming the adjustment. Your dose history is preserved with the original times.
